Excerpt of The Book of the Forsaken

The Book of the Forsaken
by Yannis Katsioris

Synopsis:

A sarcastic storyteller traps three characters in his web in order to get hold of a special book. Daniel, Cassidy and Igor are three unique individuals, considered outcasts for different reasons. They are about to meet and stick together, as coincidences and forced situations lead them to a journey all around Europe.

As everyone is after the Book of the Forsaken, the coming Game is about to take place on the dark side of the moon. But there is a cost to that knowledge. Let alone to the wish to partake.

"The Book of the Forsaken" got the gold medal on authonomy.com's HarperCollins UK hosted competition on Feb 1. 2012.

"The writing is of a very high standard, the text is engaging and the story is highly original. By introducing chapters/sections with quotations from ‘The Emerald Tablet’, the guiding principles of the alternate universe the author creates are ever present, hinting at the greater significance of events and making us want to read on to find out more."
-HarperCollins UK

John 1:1

In the beginning there was Logos ...and God of course. And it was all extremely boring for Logos because he could never beat God at any game.

But his foresight delved into time and Logos saw that there were others, who knew no games and Logos willed to teach and play with them.
Well…

Here I am. Why?

To tell you a story. Why?

Because I have to. Why?

Because everyone follows their own special set of rules. Even me. And the rules say I must communicate a part of the Eternal Truth to you people.

You see…you have no idea what the reality you live in looks like. And I’m the one who is going to draw this out for you. I will be talking about me and you won’t know whether or not it’s me I’m talking about. It enhances the mystery of the story. You know; sales go up, money comes in, I make something out of
following the damn rules.

Turn the page.

It has begun.

I was asked to review The Book of the Forsaken and due to my incredibly long list of books to review, I had to turn it down. I offered instead to do an excerpt. Hmmm... see this is the thing with excerpts, they are there to grab the reader. Some excerpts have just the right mix of mystery, intrigue and length. It hooks you in, makes you question what is going on and makes you decide to get the book to read it. Not to mention, the images and quotes are fascinating. I love the imagery Yannis Karatsioris has used to bring life to his book.

Inside the Writer's Mind - Interview with H.S. Stone

There's something about post-apocalyptic novels that grab my attention. It's interesting to read worlds authors create of what a post-apocalyptic society, especially in a dystopian one. There have been many floating around for us to grab and read. However, Beyond New Eden by H. S. Stone, certainly sounds like a good read based on it's description. It certainly takes the idea of Adam and Eve being cast out of Eden. However, I can't say much more than that as I have yet to read the story. Read the synopsis and interview and decide for yourself if this is a book you'd be interested in. I love it when a book intrigues me just from the synopsis and interview. While I do read the synopsis of a story, I also read books based on word of mouth. If someone I know likes the story, I'm more than likely to enjoy it as well.

Same DiNamics: How did you get into writing?

H.S. Stone: I've been writing since before I could read. I remember being mesmerized by the stories told by my kindergarten teacher from these things called books, and I knew that not only did I want to read lots of books myself, I also wanted to write them. Since then, I've been writing on and off for most of my life.

SD: Where did you get the idea for Beyond New Eden?

HS: Believe it or not, the idea for Beyond New Eden started out as a crime thriller. I was thinking of how much we rely on distinctive markers like DNA to determine who a criminal is, but what if a crime occurs in a city of clones where everyone has the same DNA? From there, it spun into the eventual story for Beyond New Eden, which is very different from my original idea. I kept the clones, but took out everything else, including the crime. Maybe I’ll go back one day and write the crime thriller.

SD: What has been the most challenging part of writing and publishing this book?

HS: As with all of the books I’ve written, the hardest part of writing this book was the editing. By the time a book is published, I will have gone through the manuscript countless times, and for some sections of the story, more than that. I usually get sick of my books after about the fifth revision, but I push through it because I owe it to the readers to produce the best books I can.

Marketing in general has also been a challenge for me. Not only am I a naturally introverted person who has difficulty approaching new people, but I didn't know the first thing about what marketing involves when I started. I still don't know much, but I'm learning more each day.

SD: What has been your favorite part?

HS: When I read a review from someone who loves one of my books, it makes the effort of writing and publishing it worthwhile.

SD:
Do you work from an outline or just write and see where the story takes you?

HS: I do a combination of both. I write an outline of the story that breaks the plot down into chapters, but I leave the details of each chapter up to where the story takes me when I’m writing it. When the story starts to diverge too much from my outline, I’ll re-outline the remainder of the story so that I still have a skeleton to refer to when I write.

SD: What other books have you written?

HS: I've written two novels before Beyond New Eden. My first novel is George and the Galactic Games, a sci-fi adventure for Middle Grade readers. After that, I published In the Hands of Children, a YA sci-fi apocalyptic tale of a virus that kills everyone past the age of puberty.

SD: What are you working on now?

HS: I’m currently working on my fourth novel, a YA sci-fi alien invasion story about a girl whose family is abducted by the alien invaders and her journey to rescue them. I’ve always wanted to write a novel about an alien invasion. I plan to finish up this as yet unnamed novel for an early 2014 release.

SD: What advice do you have for aspiring authors?

HS: The main reason to become an author should be because you love to write, not because you hope to become rich and famous. The odds are against you that writing will become a lucrative career, no matter how good you are, but if you love to write, you’re less likely to give up.

SD: Is there anything else you want to say to your readers?

HS:Thanks for reading my answers, and thank you, Dianne, for hosting me!

~End Interview~

Now, how's that for an interesting interview. Hmmm.. I just might have to pick up George and the Galactic Games for my soon to be 10 year old. He enjoys reading adventures.

One of my favorite questions of the interview is what advice can be given to aspiring authors. Most every author I've asked this question to has something different to say. I love the varying and sage advice that is out there. I agree with H.S. that if you write to become famous, that's not the reason to do so. Right because you love writing and you have a story that is just begging to be shared. Those characters are in your head pounding away at you until their story is told. Those are the best kind of books out there.

About Beyond New Eden and H.S. Stone

Synopsis:

Eve 142 has lived her entire life in the domed city of New Eden, home to the only surviving humans after the War. Like all of the inhabitants of New Eden, Eve 142 is a clone. Together with the other clones, dubbed the Adams and the Eves, she leads a safe, predictable existence. However, Eve’s life changes when she causes a tragic accident to befall one of the Adams. As retribution, she and her counterpart, Adam 142, are banished from New Eden.
At first, Eve 142 considers their punishment a death sentence because she grew up believing the world outside the dome was uninhabitable. She is wrong. Forced to live in the Wastelands, Eve and Adam discover many new truths about the outside world and, more importantly, the truths about themselves.

Author bio:

Even before he could read, H.S. Stone wanted to write a book. Fascinated by the stories that seemed to leap from his kindergarten teacher's books, he went home and wrote his own book, with illustrations and bound by staples. Of course, since he didn't know how to read or write yet, the book was full of gibberish. Undaunted, H.S. eventually mastered the ABC's and continued to write throughout his grade school years, adolescence, and into adulthood. Despite getting a degree and working in a field not related to writing, he continued to pursue his writing passion. Numbers Plus Four, a collection of five short stories, was H.S. Stone's first publication. He has since published a Middle Grade novel, George and the Galactic Games, and two Young Adult books, In the Hands of Children and Beyond New Eden. H.S. Stone lives with his family in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Follow the Road of Life

It has been a really long time since I've posted something personal on here. I need to get back to doing that. After all, Same DiNamics is first and foremost a personal blog. That's not to say I don't enjoy blogging about books but I have to work hard to stay true to why I started this blog.

I have to admit, the luster of blogging started fading. I don't want that though because I truly enjoy sharing with my readers, the little bit that are out there. :-) I guess with all new shiny things, the joy of them starts leaving but when you truly love something, you will always find fulfillment in it. I still do enjoy blogging, I just don't blog as much as I was doing in the beginning. I think that's fine. I've settled into a norm for me. My new norm.

My blog is less than a year old and I feel I've come far, in my life since I started it. I have patiently followed the road that is being laid before me. I don't know where it is going, I just know it is going somewhere. I can truly say this - I am a much happier person now. That is so important to me. So darn important. I found joy within and for myself. I didn't find joy through another person. Often times, we wait for others to make us happy and that's not okay. If you are truly happy within yourself, then you will find and embrace the happiness others bring to your life, not wait for other to make you happy.

Honestly, I know that I can pave the road of my life to where I want it to go but I'm hesitant of doing so. I rather enjoy of seeing where it is going, for now. I know that I'll have to take control and guide it soon but for now, I'll play along.

I believe in two things... 1. Working hard for what you want; and 2. Not forcing that door to open, when it is not ready. God will provide the necessary strength when it is time to open that door. Faith... is what I call it.

Sort of contradicting, don't you think? Not really, at least not how I see it. There are things in life that I want but I find that if I force that door to open and push hard for it to open for me, when I know in my heart I'm not ready to go there, I will fail. I believe that God will let me know and place the signs in my path that will lead me to opening that door. Once those signs are there, then it is up to me to work my butt off to achieve what has been set before me.

My book reviewing, interviews, excerpts and other book related things is one such door that I wanted to open but wasn't ready until the opportunity presented itself. I followed the road, picked up the signs and here I am today, busy as ever with all this book stuff. Though I'm busy with it, I don't feel overwhelmed. Why? Because I have control over that. I control when and what I will read, blog a review or set a date for something. Not control in a micromanaging sort of way but control so that I don't lose the enjoyment that comes from helping authors out.

Now, the door to selling my crocheted pieces is slowly opening. When I started crocheting, October will be a year, I was so not ready to sell anything. While I knew how to crochet, my skill set was still in its infancy. I'm still a newbie, yes, but I've been learning and not shying away from new things. My confidence has been building up and I feel happy and good knowing that my pieces won't fall apart.

I entered a giveaway recently and won a 30 minute consultation on how to start a crochet business. Talk about the signs being put in your way! It was there, I entered and won.How much more evident and plain can that sign be? So, I'm taking that leap of faith and hoping that this will work out for me. *Shameless plug in here... If you want to put in an order of something, let me know. ;-)*

Anyway, as always, I talk a lot. I have more to say but I'll save that for another blog post to come. I thank you for coming along with me on this Road of Life and hopefully enjoying the simple ride.

Excerpt of I l Like Your Form: Confessions of a Personal Trainer

Ever since joining the IndieView, my book review request has increased tremendously. I get several emails a day asking for a review. I simply cannot honor them all. So, in addition to doing interviews, I also offered to do excerpts of books. A lot of authors have accepted this and I'm happy to still be able to help.

I'm happy to share an excerpt and cover of I Like Your Form: Confessions of a Personal Trainer. Now that title sounds catchy. It's a collection of experiences a personal trainer has through out his career. I can only imagine the scenarios he was in. After reading the excerpt and blurb, I am certainly interested in knowing more. I like to talk but I'll hold it down, for now. Here's what you came here for, the excerpt and cover.

Excerpt of I Like Your Form: Confessions of a Personal Trainer

I’m not gonna lie. I was enjoying the fruits of my labor. My job at Precision Fitness was awesome. I was in the midst of what seemed like an endless stream of women who needed my services. I couldn’t turn my head without running into a client who was hounding me to “hang out” or “get together.” I will be the first to admit that things were quickly getting out of hand, but it was getting so easy that I was beginning to feel like I was on a yearlong tour with Mötley Crüe, complete with all the backstage debauchery one only dreams about.

With my managers sending me all the women between the ages of twenty-seven and forty-seven who walked through the doors of the gym, I felt compelled to do what I needed to do to keep this train rolling. I was making great money and having a good time doing it. I wasn’t about to possibly jeopardize all that by turning a woman down and, in the process, possibly stopping my steady influx of women from management.

As far as I was concerned, I had built up a reputation and needed to uphold it—like when that order of extra anchovies came in, someone had to deliver. Call it some sort of sick pride thing, but I felt obligated to continue my ways. I had also managed to stay drama-free. The way I saw it, I would continue to steer my present course as long as I didn’t get caught or experience something that would make me look in the mirror a little harder and seriously reconsider my ways.

So how about Mary Ann? Could I possibly make room for one more? I sure could. She fit the description of my typical female client perfectly: Already in shape, check. Very cute, with a golden-brown tan year-round, double check. In addition, Mary Ann was legally divorced, so any extracurricular affairs would be in the clear, triple check.

Tony, one of the sales managers, introduced us. Within seconds of meeting me, Mary Ann completely shifted her focus to me and seemingly forgot that she had just spent the last ten minutes talking to Tony. It was as if Tony ceased to exist. I hadn’t done much more than say hello to her, yet she already had this huge smile on her face. Could she already tell that she would end up in bed with me? When this type of shit happens to an average guy, how could he not think of himself as awesome? Tony just laughed and left us to talk, as he quickly noticed the connection and knew immediately where this was going to eventually lead.

Mary Ann was a petite thirty-nine-year-old Italian woman with a dark complexion that seemed to stay sun-soaked tan no matter what time of year it was. Her hair was a satin-like dark black, and fortunately, she lacked hairy arms, a feature that plagues some Italian women. If there was a trace of a mustache, she must have had that thing well waxed or lasered because I didn’t notice a furry upper lip. She had these thin little legs and weighed no more than 110 pounds. She had long, curly black hair and always wore a little extra makeup to the gym. At first glance, Mary Ann didn’t appear to be in need of a trainer, but who was I to turn away a paying customer?

Synopsis:

After graduating from high school and working several dead-end jobs, JD landed a job as a personal trainer at a newly opened gym. It puzzled him just how much money people were willing to spend to train with him despite the fact he was so inexperienced. He then started learning the ropes of the business and carved a niche for himself training well-to-do housewives and successful older women.  As time goes on, he finds that not only can he help with their physical demands, he can also help them out with their erotic ones.

JD starts to fight an internal struggle between making money satisfying his clients and knowing what he is doing is wrong. All it would take is his girlfriend or any one of his clients' spouses to find out about their sultry affairs, and everything could blow up in his face causing him to lose his career. However, it's very difficult to turn away from the attention of many attractive and sexy women.

I Like Your Form is a hilarious and honest collection of stories giving advice for personal trainers and clients. JD's real-life confessions provide a look at the lesser-known aspects of personal training.

Author and Book Info:

Growing up in South Philadelphia, JD was no different from any other kid. The middle of three siblings, JD filled his days playing wiffle ball and living for Sundays when his beloved Eagles would take center stage. His love of sports in his youth set the ground work for a career in the fitness industry.  Driven to succeed, his work ethic in his first years in the workforce seemed to curb his interest in chasing girls-that is, of course, until he started working as a personal trainer. After years in the business, and always having a knack for storytelling, JD has decided to share these stories with the world.

Inside the Writer's Mind - Interview with Michelle Mogil

Welcome, Michelle, to Inside the Writer's Mind.  I'll be asking you some questions, sort of picking your brain a little bit to get to know you as an author. Thank you for joining me. Ready?

Same DiNamics: Writing can be a daunting prospect, what made you decide to share your story with the world?

Michelle Mogil: I am an introvert by nature, so I find writing a way to express my thoughts without having to deal with an immediate reaction. I was delighted when I discovered the Internet, way back in 1985 when it was mostly text-based, and could interact, more or less anonymously, with people all over the world. When these anonymous interactions were mostly positive, it gave me confidence in my ability to convey my ideas through writing. Still, it took a couple of decades and a great deal of courage to click on that "PUBLISH" button and send something out there with my real self behind it. The fact that people like it has been a pleasant surprise and very gratifying.

SD: Who has influenced you as an author?

MM: I love Ursula LeGuin, Ray Bradbury and Ann Taylor. To me, they represent quintessential storytellers. I've found inspiration, not only in other writers, but in film and television producers as well. For me, Must See TV was "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", and Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone", as well as "Outer Limits". On the weekends, I used to stay up until the television stations signed off for the night watching old science fiction and horror movies. I am most drawn to those creative minds that take the imagination and send it into orbit.

SD: What is your writing method? Do you outline first or do you purge your brain on paper until your story is told?

MM: I start with a conversation between two vaguely defined characters. I find human interaction completely fascinating. I really enjoy sitting in a bar or cafe, pretending to read while I shamelessly eavesdrop on the people around me. I take these conversations and weave a story around them. The characters tend to define themselves and the story itself as I go. So, I guess the answer is, I do a brain dump, like a big blob of mental clay, then I go back and mold the blob into something recognizable.

SD: How long does it take you to write your story, from getting it down on paper to publishing?

MM: It took me less than a month to get the story down, then another two months working with an editor/mentor to turn it into a mature, well-written novel.

SD: Can you tell me a little bit about your book(s) without giving away too much? Why should I read it?

MM: "The Gentle Man" is a story of wishful thinking. My heroine has pretty much resigned herself to a life of drudgery in her downhill years: her husband seems more interested in his gardening than her, she's being laid off from her well-paid full-time job at the university, and she doesn't seem to have much to look forward to. Along comes this skinny little foreign guy with strangely compelling eyes who claims he's running for his life. What woman wouldn't be entranced by his soft accent, his swift and complete infatuation, and his promise of a better existence? Ana wavers between her loyalty to her neglectful husband and the temptation to throw caution to the winds. In the end, she discovers a love far deeper than she had imagined.

SD: How much of yourself is in your character(s)?

MM: Oh, Ana is definitely me, foul mouth, impulsive behavior and all.

SD: What advice would you give to an aspiring author?

MM: Since I'm still in the "aspiring" stage myself, I don't know how effective my advice would be. As a cautionary tale, though, I would say I deeply regret that I didn't act on my writing skills sooner in my life. To those young people who find themselves compelled to write down the workings of their minds, I say write away! Then find someone to read your work and help you hone your skills. The world needs imagination and escape from the drudgery of daily living and you, the storyteller, can give it something incredibly valuable.

But please, please, PLEASE take the time to write well. There are so many independently published books out there — many of which have wonderful stories. But too many of them are ruined by bad writing and horrible execution. I was bitten by my own haste to publish and am so very glad that I took a step back and re-worked my novel with the help of a mentor. It's so absolutely wonderful that, with today's technology and access to the Internet, anyone can publish their works. But it's also rather worrisome that the market is being flooded with writers that — just like me, I'll freely admit — pushed that "PUBLISH" button a bit too quickly. Take the time and spend the money to have your work professionally edited.

SD: Is there anything else that you'd like to share?

MM: Only that I am really enjoying this new journey I'm on and I'm excited about what may be around the next corner. I'm looking forward to publishing the sequel to "The Gentle Man" in November of this year. Yes, Ana's story does continue because, you see, there are consequences to what she's done...

~End Interview~

I love Michelle's advice to authors on taking the time to write well. Everyone out there thinks of themselves a critic but there's nothing worse than reading a book that read as if the words were just thrown together. I do believe that everyone has a story to tell, it's just a matter of how that story is told.

Synopsis:

Ana Trent is having a change of life -- and it ain’t menopause. Just when she had resigned herself to a life of drudgery and angst in her downhill years, Ana is accosted by a mysterious man running for his life. Naturally, she tries to help. Naturally, things don’t go well.
About Michelle:

Michelle lives in the wilds of Upstate New York with an arbitrary number of chickens, three cats, one neurotic greyhound, and a very tolerant husband. She has three daughters; one of which has retaliated with three grandsons.

Cover and Snippet of Retribution by Amy Thompson

Last week, I made a mistake... I neglected to share a cover reveal post. I honestly forgot. That day was the first day of school for my children and my brain was wrapped around that. I discovered this error and spoke with the author. She gave me a second chance and I'm thankful for that.

After seeing the cover image and reading the synopsis of Retribution, I have to admit that I was intrigued. I enjoy reading new, or new to me, supernatural stories.

Synopsis:

Regan Edison has just moved from California, to enter her first year at Georgia Liberty College, the place where jacked up Chevy trucks and hunting are a way of life. Regan hopes to start a new life for herself and she thinks that Georgia is just the place to do it. That is until she meets an unexpected stranger.
Colter Hayes is a member of the Collectors, a group of wrongfully punished lost souls. Colter and the rest of his team, Finn, Kaiden and Devon, work for the Requiem Council who pass judgment on those souls that are neither tagged for Heaven nor Hell. The Council has charged the Collectors with finding the lost in exchange for a chance at redemption.

When an ex-councilmember known to pass Retribution on lost souls sets his sights on Regan, the Requiem Council dispatches the Collectors to Georgia to work as protectors for Regan. The Collectors must fight to save Regan from a fate they know all too well, but can they work to earn back their chance at redemption or are their fates sealed forever?

Who is meant for Heaven?
Who is meant for Hell?
                          And who is just lost?
